Top Five Tips for Search Engine Optimisation

Making sure small businesses get the edge over their competitors has always been one of the Internet Business School’s greatest aims. That’s why we’ve produced many professional internet marketing courses over the years, and stayed up to date with all the latest internet marketing trends. Throughout our years of experience, we’ve noticed that some businesses simply aren’t making the most of SEO - also known as search engine optimisation. This is what determines how far up search rankings a website will be displayed. When seventy percent of customers click on the top three sites listed, it’s never been more important to please Google and boost your site skywards. Here are five things you should consider when optimising your site for Google.

- Research is key

Before you start filling up your site, make sure to research not only the keywords you should be using, but also the keywords your competitors are using. There are many tools out there to do this, from Google Adwords to premium sites that can rank you in comparison to your competitors. Make sure to find out how many people actually do search the keywords you’re aiming for. Sometimes a simple Google search is enough to see how you compare with your rivals.

- Create rather than alter

Google awards businesses who are actively creating new content for their sites with higher rankings. Whilst it is advisable to optimise the pre-existing content on your blog, make sure you add new optimised content to your site as well. This could be in the form of blog posts, articles, testimonials, how-to guides, the limit is your imagination.

- Quality over Quantity

When it comes to this new content, don’t be tempted to just spam your website with the relevant keywords. Creating a page just filled with keywords for no other purpose than boosting your search engine rankings is deemed bad practice and can even get your site taken down from Google. Even if you only post new content once or twice a week, make sure it is meaningful as well as optimised. That’s why it’s better to write blogs, articles or guides for your customers as it boosts your ranking and provides a service.

- Make use of your titles and images.

Remember to include your keywords in the titles and headers of your content. This signifies not only to the reader but to Google, the importance of that keyword to the page. When you upload images, remember to add your keywords to not only the title of the image, but also the alt. Text as Google also reads these. Adding keywords to your images also helps if a customer is searching on Google Images as an image with keywords is more likely to show up there.

- Reputable links

Having your site linked to from reputable sources give it prestige and boosts it up the rankings. Creating links couldn’t be easier. If your products have been reviewed by another site, be they a news site, a blogger, or industry page, ask them to include a link to your page. Social media also counts so make sure to link your website to your social media pages and visa versa.
